I only stumbled on engineering by accident and immediately decided what I wanted to do - make things that work better DISSATISFACTION, REAPPLIEDTHERE HAD TO BE A BETTER WAY In 1978, dissatisfied with the performance of his new Hoover Junior vacuum cleaner, James had an idea. He'd spotted a local sawmill using cyclone technology to separate sawdust particles from the air. Could this work on a vacuum cleaner? James ripped off his Hoover's clogging, stinking bag and replaced it with a crude cardboard prototype of his cyclone design - and it worked!PERSEVERANCE AND PERFECTIONISM5,127 PROTOTYPES James knew he was onto something, but it would take time to perfect his idea. Five years and 5,127 prototypes later, he created DC01, the world's first bagless vacuum cleaner.TODAYDYSON IS A GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY ENTERPRISE Fast-forward over two decades. Dyson has grown from one man with one idea, to a global technology enterprise of over 7,000 people. More than 3,000 of them are engineers. From acoustic to robotic, software to electronic, they use their diverse skills to solve the problems others ignore.

The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology teaches the next generation of engineering enthusiasts: people with a passion for solving problems and a fascination for how things work. Students at the Institute work towards a degree in engineering, while holding a real engineering job in Dyson's cutting-edge Research, Design and Development department. They are Dyson engineers from day one.

Read about the work we did around the world in 2019 to inspire the next generation of engineers.Our mission is to inspire the next generation of engineersAs a society, we are failing to help young people by not connecting the science, design, technology and maths they learn in the classroom with the exciting and important engineering problems and solutions in the outside world.I joined the James Dyson Foundation because I felt lucky to have accidently fallen into an engineering education, both at school and university. However, so many young people miss out, as they're misinformed or, quite simply, not introduced to engineering as a potential career at all. We continue to face a global shortfall of engineers. Failing to address this problem is expected to cost the UK economy alone £27 billion every year. Put simply, we need more engineers. That is why James set up the James Dyson Foundation in 2002 - to combat the shortage by inspiring the next generation of engineers. The James Dyson Foundation brings real-life engineering into the classroom through school resources and workshops. In 2019, we reached more than 200,000 students through these programmes. We want to empower young people to excel as engineers, and remove the barriers that might prevent them fromachieving their potential. That's why we also offer financial support for students, through bursaries and partnerships with top universities. James feels strongly about giving young people a platform to develop and commercialise new ideas. And his international design competition, the James Dyson Award, does just that. It's continuing to work with more budding inventors - from 27 different countries. This report sets out some of the highlights and achievements from the James Dyson Foundation's year. We've worked with some of the world's brightest minds - and we look forward to inspiring even more young people about the possibilities of engineering in the year to come.INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION The James Dyson Foundation works on a global scale to inspire young people about the exciting world of engineering. We work with primary school children through to university students and graduates, to ensure they have the knowledge and support needed to pursue their engineering ambitions. We also support medical and scientific research projects, and charitable causes that are local to Dyson. We work across 27 countries and regions globally, with a focus on the UK, US, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. We're a registered charity, supported by Dyson and, to date, James and the James Dyson Foundation have donated more than £100m to charitable cuases. In 2019, the Foundation launched a new school workshop aimed at introducing sixth form students to the world of robotics, software and mechanical engineering - as well as the unique pathway into engineering offered by the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. We also published our report - addressing the skills shortage: a new approach to engineering education in schools - and we received mor e than 1,000 entries to the James Dyson Award, an international design engineering competition aimed at university students and graduates. Our total 12019 spend was £1.04m.
