The History of New Balance

In 1906 British emigrant William J. Riley, founded the New Balance Arch Support Company. New Balance Arch Support Company made arch supports and other foot care accessories created to improve the fit of shoes, and sold mainly to Boston and surrounding areas. Riley's first product was a flexible arch support. This flexible arch support was created with three support points. These three support points provided better balance and more comfort for the shoe. It is said that the name New Balance came from Riley observing the chickens that were in his yard, and kept a chicken foot on his desk, as a demonstration of how his arch support functioned. The chicken's three pronged foot, similar to his three support points, was perfectly balanced. In 1956, the business was sold to Eleanor and Paul Kidd , the daughter and son-in-law of Riley's business partner, and in 1960 Eleanor and Paul designed and produced the world's first running shoe that had rippled sole, the Trackster. Aside from being the first shoe that was designed with a rippled sole, it was also the first running shoe that came in a variety of widths. The YMCA designated the Trackster as their unofficial shoe, which gave the shoe brand a huge boost in sales and awareness. Boston University, Tufts University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were a few of the first universities to use the the New Balance Trackster as the official shoe for their cross-country teams. Soon after, many other universities and private high schools around the country followed suit and used the New Balance Trackster for their cross-county teams as well.
